Schoolkids in Crawley, West Sussex, came up with the name — and the less flattering Rubbish Ranganathan.
And Romesh, 46, was asked by the council to choose his favourite.
The Weakest Link host said: “They emailed me saying, ‘Here are the names we’ve settled on but we don’t want you to be annoyed so can you tell us which you prefer?’
“I don’t know what your rights are when a bin van is named after you.”
Speaking on the Perfect Day with Jessica Knappett podcast, he joked: “Obviously I’m going to decline in popularity and work rate and I wonder if I’m going to get another email going, ‘Romesh it’s time . . . just to let you know we’re retiring Romesh Recyclenathan’.”
Others in the council’s bin fleet include Obi-Wan Binobi, Binderella, Bindiana Jones, Bin Diesel and Reggie the Red, after the mascot of local football team Crawley Town.
The Sun revealed this week that Romesh is bringing back a new version of Art Attack.
A TV insider said: “Like millions of Brits who grew up in the Nineties and Noughties, Romesh was no doubt a fan of the show.
“So now he’s passing that joy on to the next generation with this modern-day interpretation, which is destined for a major children’s network, probably Children’s BBC. It will be something of a departure for Ranga Bee however as they tend to make comedy shows, usually starring their owner, Mr Ranganathan, himself.”
